THE GO PROJECT EXPANDS TO BROOKLYN TO HELP YOUNG AT-RISK PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN GAIN ACADEMIC FOUNDATION TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL
Private School Partnership with Berkeley Carroll Lower School Starts in October
(New York City, NY, June 1, 2017) The GO Project, an award-winning non-profit that has successfully helped more than 5,000 at-risk kindergarten through eighth graders in under-resourced Manhattan public schools gain the academic foundation to graduate high school, announced today that they are expanding their services to Brooklyn.
The best chance a child has to break the cycle of poverty is to graduate high school on time. In New York City, nearly 30% of public school students will not graduate on time and more than 50% of students with a special education classification (due to a learning disability, language impairment or social/emotional disturbance) will not graduate on time.
To combat this problem, the GO Project targets under-resourced and academically-struggling public school students at the earliest stage of their education, working with them through eighth grade, to equip them with the skills needed for future success, using a year-round academic, social and emotional, and family support programs. 90% of the students that the GO Project serves are eligible for free- or reduced-priced lunch, a federal indicator of poverty; and 50% of the students have a special education classification.
The GO Project delivers their holistic program through a unique partnership model with local independent/private schools that engages the whole community in their children's success. The schools donate classrooms and program space on Saturdays during the school year and for five weeks during the summer, so hundreds of GO public school students can build academic skills and develop a love of learning that will propel them through their education and career.
The community partner they’ve chosen to launch their Brooklyn program is The Berkeley Carroll School in Park Slope. The program will launch this October with two first and second grade classes with a kindergarten class expected to start in January 2018, serving a total of 75 students from P.S. 56 Lewis H. Latimer in District 13, Brooklyn Brownstone School in District 16, and Dr. Jacqueline Peek-Davis School, P.S. 375 Jackie Robinson School, Brooklyn Arts and Science Elementary School, and P.S. 770 New American Academy in District 17.
“There are hundreds of children throughout New York City that need the type of intervention that we provide at GO. Thanks to Berkeley Carroll and our other community partners, we not only inspire hundreds of students to succeed, we save on costs, recruit volunteers, share resources and promote educational equity throughout the community,” said Gayle Villani, Interim Executive Director of the GO Project.
“GO has helped so many students and families in Manhattan. We're excited to help them do the same in Brooklyn," said Robert D. Vitalo, Head of School at Berkeley Carroll.
Berkeley Carroll School joins GO Project’s Manhattan host site partners: Grace Church, Grace Church School, LREI, Friends Seminary, Avenues: The World School, and The Church of St. Luke in the Fields.
