Our Challenge

At the GO Project, we believe that all children deserve access to a high-quality education.

New York City is the largest public school system in the country, and, despite efforts to improve the public education system, many children who need additional support are left behind.

Today in New York City, 80% of public school students will graduate on time, and less than 50% of students with a special education classification  will graduate on time.

To combat this problem, the GO Project serves public school students who have the largest learning gaps early in their education, and provides young learners with a high-quality academic, enrichment and family support program that equips them with the skills needed for future success.

Of the students GO serves:

  • 100% are 1-2 years behind their peers when they enter the program in kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade.
  • 90% are eligible for free/reduced-priced lunch, a federal indicator of poverty.
  • 45% have a special education classification as a result of a learning disability, speech or language impairment, or emotional disturbance.
  • 40% attend a high-need public school.
  • 45% are from single-parent homes.
  • 20% are English Language Learners.
  • 34% of students are Asian, 31% are Hispanic, 21% are Black, 11% are Multi-Racial, and
    3% are Caucasian.

Instead of falling behind, GO students perform on grade level, are promoted to the next grade on time, and are accepted into high performing middle and high schools. Their academic improvement also eases pressure off teaching staff in their public school and allows for more quality instructional time for their entire class.
